Get ready for exciting bell-ringing demonstrations, exhibitions, themed tours, trails, talks, and a Victorian party packed with family crafts workshops, costumed characters, music, story-telling, dressing-up boxes, cake and much more.

THURSDAY, 8 SEPTEMBER
6-7pm, Collective bell-ringing event
Working in partnership with Sheffield Universities’ Guild of Change Ringers (SUGCR), St Marie’s Cathedral will be joining many other churches across the country in a collective bell-ringing event.

FRIDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER
5.30-6.30pm, Talk: The Stained-glass Windows at St Marie’s Cathedral
Discover St Marie’s stained-glass windows and find out more about their history and hidden symbolism in this fascinating talk delivered by the cathedral historian, Deacon Bill Burleigh. From exquisite Victorian windows -some of them designed by the world-famous architect, Augustus Pugin- to incredibly beautiful modern glasses. The talk will include a short tour around the cathedral to admire and explore these unique pieces. Drop-in (No booking required).

SATURDAY, 10 SEPTEMBER
10-11am, Tour: Around the World from St Marie’s Cathedral
Travel around the world without leaving St Marie’s and explore the links that the cathedral has with other countries and communities. Discover amazing artworks from countries like Italy, Poland and Germany, or listen to fascinating war and emigration stories. Booking is required. To book please click here

11am & 11.30am: Bell-ringing demonstrations
Don’t miss the rare chance to visit the Cathedral’s bell chamber and find out more about the fascinating and complex systems used by the bell-ringers. These unique demonstrations will be performed by the Sheffield Universities’ Guild of Change Ringers. Please note that chamber access is by a spiral staircase (no lift/disabled access available). Demonstrations start at 11am and 11.30am. Limited places. Booking is required. To book please click here

1.30-4.30pm: Victorian party
Join us for this unique family-friendly party to celebrate St Marie’s over 160 years of history. Travel back to the Victorian times, when our stunning Cathedral was built, and discover our fascinating history, stories and treasures. Get ready for an amazing event packed with family crafts workshops, trails, story-telling, dressing-up boxes, history displays, costumed characters, music, cake and much more. All free! Drop-in (No booking required).

 

St Marie’s will also be open for visitors on Thurs 9.30–11.30am/1.30–5pm; Fri 9.30–11.30am/3–5pm; Sat 9.30–11am/1.30–4.30pm; Sun 1.30–5.30pm
